Executive Board Meeting 

The monthly executive board meeting of the Veteran Boxers Association of NY,  Ring 8, Inc. was held on Tuesday, March 16th, 2009 at the Waterfront Crabhouse in Long Island City , New York .  

Board members in attendance: President, Matt Farrago, V.P. Henny Wallitsch, Lenny Mangiapane, Bob Duffy, Henry Hascup, Tony Mazzarella, Johnny Breitenbruck, Paulette Balog, Tommy Gallagher, Frank Pena, Keith Sullivan, Tony Di Pippo, Richie O’Neil and John Labate 

Our next meeting will be at the Waterfront Crabhouse, Tuesday, May 18th , at 7:00pm. Board of Directors will meet at 6:00pm.  

1. R.I.P. boxers were acknowledged: 

 

a. Arthur Mercante: Referee for more than 120 world title fights, the last one on September 29, 2001, when he was 81. Legendary Hall of Fame referee Arthur Mercante passed away at his home this morning. Arthur was ninety (90) years of age. Mercante refereed many of the biggest championhip fights including the “Fight of the Century” between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971. He will be waked at the Fairchild F. H. in Garden City, N.Y. Dates and times not as yet known. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, and sons, James, Glenn, Arthur and Thomas. 

  

b. Frank Nardizzi: Frank was a long time Ring 8 member, and he will be deeply missed. Professional record of 7 wins (6 by ko) and 5 losses. 

c. Venezuelan world lightweight boxing champion Edwin Valero: CARACAS , Venezuela (AP)—Former boxing champion Edwin Valero, who gained fame for knocking out all his 27 opponents and having a tattoo of Hugo Chavez on his chest, was found dead. 

  

The following items were discussed: 

  

  1. The Tribute to “ Sunnyside Gardens ” is tentatively scheduled to take place in September due to the process of designing and cutting the monument stone. Updates will be presented to all Ring 8 members as plans progress.
  1. Congratulations to Alex Ramos and Jacquie Richardson on their work with Rocky Lockridge.

Viewers of the A&E series “Intervention” saw the story of Rocky Lockridge, a champion boxer who fell into drug addiction. Lockridge was a former world junior boxing champion who descended into crack and alcohol addiction. Lockridge was admitted into Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center in Rayville , Louisiana , where he spent three months as a patient. He was released February 8.  Lockridge is now looking to pull his life together. 

  1. The Bill Gallo $1,000 scholarship was presented to Kathleen Walsh for her achievements in the ring and at college. She is a full time student at Suffolk Community College and trains at Heavy Hitters Boxing Club. She was a finalist in 2010 Golden Gloves losing by a controversial decision. On behalf of all of the members of Ring 8 we wish you the best of luck both in and out of the Ring.
  1. Mike Bernard spoke about this upcoming event that will pay tribute to Iran Barkley.

The AAIB, Inc. will hold its 41st Annual luncheon on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 12.00 noon at The Edward and Mary Doyle Center , Teamsters Local 456, 160 North Central Avenue, Elmsford , NY 10523-1913

Awards will be presented to world champion boxers and members of the medical, official and media of the ring game.  Additionally, we will be honoring Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans, along with our scholarship recipients.
