Patrick Day Scholarship

I wish to announce  I just received notification from the Freeport School Board  ( Ms Emma Perdamo ) that our scholarship application was unanimously approved and was accepted   last night by the Freeport Superintendent of Schools.  This scholarship will be called  The Patrick Day Sports Achievement  Award  sponsored by Ring 8/NY.  This award will be presented at the upcoming Medal and Awards Night and will go to an a honor student who is active in sports . This award will be for a sum of $500.00 per for the next 5 years and the recipient will be chosen by Freeport High School Administrators & Teachers .   Ring 8 has pledge to reevaluating this scholarship another 5 years ( 6th thru 10 year) in the hope of maintaining this worthy cause.

Again I think a special thanks should go to then president Charley Norkus and the Board members who unanimously approved of this endeavor
.
On a special note The Administrator and several teachers were taken back by Ring 8 generosity in remembering as they put it one the most respected and mild mannered and well liked students of Freeport  H.S and how  Patrick  (, A NYC Golden Golden Glove champion , a member of the US Olympic Team( Alternate ), & WBC Continental Champion ) always  lead by example .both in and out of school as well as in and out of the Ring.

R.I.P. – Mary Tate

It is a deep regret that I was informed of the passing of Ring 8 long time member, Mary Tate.

Bill and Mary Tate

Ms Tate, the wife of former Board Member, William ( Bill ) Tate, was considered by many of us old timers as the first lady of Ring 8. Always making her presence at meetings and a constant presence at all our Ring 8 /NYSBOF events. A recipient of a Ring 8 lifetime member award she will surely be missed. Bill and Mary were first to donate a $1,000 towards the burial of Welterweight Champion “Kid” Gavilan, a gesture that is still remembered to this day . …Our prayers & thoughts
